About us

Welcome to the Building a Strong Foundation for Wisconsin Energy Codes program an initiative aimed at strengthening the resilience and sustainability of buildings throughout Wisconsin. We focus on the adoption and integration of building energy codes that promote energy efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and ensure safety in the face of natural disasters and climate change. By updating and standardizing building practices, we empower communities to create structures that are not only more durable and cost-effective but also environmentally responsible. Discover how the Wisconsin Energy Codes program is transforming the future of construction, helping to build safer, greener, and more resilient communities for generations to come.

Resilient and Efficient Codes Implementation

This program is funded through the Department of Energy’s Resilient and Efficient Codes Implementation (RECI) grant which has an objective to advance the efficiency and resilience of building energy codes in states and local jurisdictions throughout the United States. By promoting the adoption and compliance of building energy codes, RECI aims to ensure that buildings can save people and businesses money, and make buildings safer and more durable in the face of extreme weather events.

As part of RECI, Building a Strong Foundation for Wisconsin Energy Codes program emphasizes the importance of energy efficiency, encouraging sustainable construction practices that reduce carbon footprints, lower operational costs, and improve the long-term viability of buildings.

The Wisconsin Energy Codes program provides comprehensive support to local governments, construction professionals, and communities, offering guidance, and technical resources for integrating these advanced codes into new and existing building projects. By aligning construction practices with the latest research and innovations, RECI helps to foster a more sustainable built environment that benefits both people and the planet. The program’s collaborative approach ensures that safety, resilience, and efficiency are not just goals but practical, achievable outcomes for communities nationwide.

Our partners

This project is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) under the Building Technologies Office—DE-FOA-0002813—Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Resilient and Efficient Codes Implementation.

Slipstream, Clean Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Local Government Climate Coalition (WLGCC), Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (MEEA), and New Buildings Institute (NBI) link arms to strengthen Wisconsin’s ability to enact residential and commercial energy codes that reduce energy use and bring the state closer to meeting its clean energy goals. We are working closely with the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS). Read more about this in our press release.

Resources

The following resources have been developed as part of the Wisconsin Energy Codes Program in support of the upcoming energy code adoption process. Stay tuned for additional materials.

Stay Involved

We are excited you are interested in Wisconsin Energy Codes! There are several ways to stay involved:

Energy Code questions and education: If you are a code official, energy rater, design or construction professional and have any questions on the energy codes of Wisconsin, please reach out to our Energy Code Technical Advisor.

New construction baseline study: If you are a developer or in the construction industry and want to take part in a historic and comprehensive energy baseline study, find out more here, and don’t hesitate to reach out.

Energy code adoption process:  The Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Code is currently being updated. The Commercial Energy Code is currently being taken up by the State Supreme Court.  The project team is assisting in all code adoption processes by presenting to the Wisconsin Advisory Council on Building Sustainability which is an advisory body on the code adoption process.  Contact us if you want to stay in touch on the code adoption process.

Have any other questions or just want to talk energy codes? Submit the form here to say hello. We always are interested to hear from people that want to know more about how energy codes can save Wisconsin residents and businesses money on energy costs.
